Plight of a Malaysian family.

The evening of 14th June 2009 saw the tragic death of a Malaysian Gnanaprakasam Anthony (of Indian origin) whilst in police custody.

At about 9.00pm a crowd gathered at the University Hospital, Petaling Jaya.

YB R. Sivarasa Rasiah (MP Subang), YB S Manikavasagam (MP Kapar) and YB Elizabeth Wong (Adun for Bukit Lanjan) were present to lend support to the family of Gnanaprakasam Anthony who were lodging a police report at the police beat base in the hospital, that the latter was found dead in police lock-up.

A lawyer, Miss Renuka, from the Bar Council was present to assist the family members in filing the report.

Initially the police did not allow the wife of the deceased to view his body, but after intervention by the MPs, then only was the wife allowed to view only the face of the deceased. It seems there were sign of bruises on the deceased’s face.

Gnanaprakasam’s wife, M. Manimegalai was not permitted to view other parts of her husband’s body.
Whilst Gnanaprakasam Anthony may be rightfully detained by the police for investigation into allegation of house break-in in Sungai Buloh, the family and even members of the public are concerned as to how he ended dead in lock-up especially since he was in good health as pointed out by the family members.
